A parade and air show featuring the elite of the French military
Every year since 1880, the Republic honours the Nation on July 14th, the national day of France, marking the anniversary of pivotal events during the French Revolution. On what is known in English-speaking countries as Bastille Day, the national holiday ceremonies begin at 10:00 with a military parade along the Champs-Elysees from the Place de l'Etoile to the Place de la Concorde. The oldest and largest military parade in Europe takes place before countless spectators, the principal figures of the government, the authorities of the State, the diplomatic corps, foreign guests and, of course, the President of the Republic. Comprising units on foot, motorised, mounted and aerial, the procession includes some 4,000 military and police officers, 240 horses, and 460 vehicles including 80 motorcycles. The French Foreign Legion bring up the rear of the parade, due to the slower ceremonial marching pace of this branch of the services.
At 10:45 comes the fly-past, painting the Parisian sky a patriotic red, white and blue. This stunning display of precision flying showcases the planes and helicopters of the nation’s air force and army. In addition to the nine Alpha Jets of the Patrouille de France, the precision aerobatic display unit of the French Air Force, sixty planes will fly more than 7 km over Paris at a height of 305 metres to the delight of the watching crowds. After 12 minutes of breathtaking spectacle, the Caïman, Puma, Tiger, Caracal and Cougar helicopters will close the show.
A firework display and firefighters' ball to close this day of celebration
Around 23:00, the sky over Paris will come alive for thirty minutes with the vivid hues and gorgeous patterns of a magnificent firework display, a veritable pyrotechnic show dazzling with its virtuosity, fired from the Eiffel Tower and the Jardins du Trocadero. This extraordinary demonstration of technical prowess has ‘love, sharing and conviviality’ as its theme this year and is the work of dozens of dedicated technicians, pyrotechnics experts, and sound and lighting specialists. To make the most of this event, which is always eagerly awaited by the public and very well-attended, it’s best to find a vantage point on the Champ-de-Mars.
You can finish this day of celebration in style at one of the famous firefighters’ balls held in the various districts of the capital by nearly a dozen barracks that have chosen to participate this year. Some take place on the evening of July 13th but others are scheduled for the 14th. From 21:00 to 4:00 you can have fun dancing the night away!
